Character
Character Name: Shinjiro Aragaki
(His childhood nickname is Shinji, which his best friend Akihiko still calls him by to this day.)
Canon: Persona 3 (Persona 3 Portable - Female Main Character's Path)
Canon Point: October 5th
Type: Canon AU?
Age: 18 years old

History/Key Points: Shinjiro's childhood was spent in the care of an orphanage; it's unknown at what age he ended up there or whom his family was, but it was at a time when he was pretty young. At the age of four, he met and befriended siblings Akihiko and Miki Sanada, new residents of the orphanage. When he and Akihiko were eight years old, they lost Miki when a fire burned the orphanage to the ground. The boys' friendship grew tighter after the tragedy, and they vowed that they would get stronger to protect their friends.

In middle school, Shinjiro and Akihiko befriended a girl named Mitsuru Kirijo, who offered Akihiko the chance to fight monsters born of negative emotion called shadows during the Dark Hour, a hidden hour between two days which those who have the 'potential' can experience. The three teens possessed this trait, which also played a part in giving them the ability to summon personas, their 'other sides' or alteregos (most if not all based on mythological deities, monsters, and ancient heroes) that appear and cast powerful spells and attacks that can eliminate the creatures. Shinjiro wasn't pressured to join the cause by Akihiko, who feared Shinjiro might not be able to control his power. However, Shinjiro became a member anyway, wanting to stick close to his friend. The three comrades founded SEES (which stands for Special Extracurricular Execution Squad) and, under the guise of a school club, made it their mission to eliminate shadows and the Dark Hour.

About two years before the game starts, SEES goes out on one of their nightly missions to fight shadows. Shinjiro pursues a shadow and brutally slays it with his persona...along with a woman in the process. Though the murder was accidental and the group cleared of punishment, the woman's death haunted Shinjiro to the point that he started to become anti-social and reclusive. He left SEES and distanced himself from Mitsuru and Akihiko as much as possible, guilt eating away at him.

Shinjiro is first introduced in the game when the main character (Minako), Junpei, and Yukari go to check up on and meet up with Akihiko at Tatsumi Memorial Hospital. Dressed in a dingy red pea coat and beanie, he quickly makes a beeline for the exit once he's done exchanging some information with Akihiko. Akihiko introduces him as an information source on their current task, which is to investigate a ghost story and a missing girl from their school.

Minako, Junpei, and Yukari's sleuthing of their classmate's disappearance eventually takes them to the darker side of Port Island Station, where the more unsavory of individuals hang out. When a group of punks tries to give them a hard time, Shinjiro emerges from the shadows and sends the thugs scurrying...all with a single headbutt. Once things calm down, he scolds the trio for coming there, but shares what he knows about the missing girl and the ghost story that he's picked up from the school delinquents hanging out in the area. Yukari comments that Shinjiro has a good heart, but he brushes the compliment off, finding it strange to be told that.

Akihiko makes contact with Shinjiro several times as the game progresses, urging him to come back to SEES. Unsurprisingly, Shinjiro rejects the offer every time. Over time, we learn that Shinjiro is taking a special medicine that he obtains from the game's antagonists, Strega. The pills are suppressants that help him keep his persona under control, and he starts to use them regularly just as the members of Strega do. Unfortunately, the pills always come at a price. Not considering the outcome, he tells Strega about SEES' plans and goals.

It isn't until SEES recruits a boy named Ken Amada that Shinjiro's answer to Akihiko about rejoining the shadow slayers changes. In late August, Shinjiro moves back into the SEES' dormitory. In September, he fights alongside the party with his persona, Castor. Minako gets the opportunity to get to know Shinjiro in the next few weeks, and learns that he has a softer side; he loves to cook, and he loves animals (especially dogs). With her encouragement, Shinjiro cooks a big dinner for the residents of the dormitory, and gets rave reviews from everyone. At the end of September, Shinjiro tells Minako that he's lost his watch. Minako discovers that the watch has been turned in to the police at Paulownia Mall, and is able to return it to him.

While Shinjiro is building a relationship with Minako, he's also put into an awkward situation with Ken. During a full moon battle with the Hermit shadow, Ken sees Shinjiro's persona in action, and confirms that Castor was the one that killed his mother two years ago. Feeling great pain and anger, Ken continues to plot his revenge on Shinjiro.

Shinjiro's possession of the suppressants is revealed to SEES when they have Chidori Yoshino, a member of Strega, captured and held in a hospital room under their custody. Chidori's persona Medea starts to grow angry and attack its host, but Shinjiro reacts quickly and gives her a dose of the suppressants. Angry that Shinjiro is in possession of the drugs, Akihiko and his best friend confront each other outside of the hospital. Akihiko tells Shinjiro that the suppressants' side effects are deadly, and reminds him of the promise they made when they were younger.

On the night of October 4th, while the rest of SEES deals with another major arcana shadow, Ken and Shinjiro meet up in the alleyway near the spot where Ken's mother was killed two years prior. Shinjiro, his pain and guilt eating away at him, doesn't put up a fight when the boy aims his spear at him. He does tell Ken that if he goes through with his revenge, that he'll be no better than him in the end. They are interrupted by Strega, and Takaya aims his gun at Ken threateningly. When the weapon is fired, Shinjiro darts in front of Ken and takes both shots to his chest. Because he has his watch inside a pocket within the breast of his pea coat, the device absorbs one of the bullets, preventing the attack from being fatal. Before falling into a coma, Shinjiro tells Akihiko and Minako to take care of everyone. Shinjiro is taken to the hospital where he spends the rest of the game in a coma, followed by recovery.

His voice can be heard encouraging Minako during the game's final battle, even though he can't be there physically.

After the final battle is over, everyone's memories of the Dark Hour are tucked away until March. When Shinjiro remembers what happened, he hurries to Gekkoukan High School as fast as he can; he's not quite his old self in physical health, referring to himself as a 'sick guy' when he speaks to the protagonist. He finds Minako on the roof, and holds the exhausted protagonist in his arms on one of the benches during her final moments. He tells her that he heard her voice while he was unconscious, and that he was happy to have met her.

Personality: Scruffy. Intimidating. Distant. Harsh. That sums up Shinjiro pretty well...at first glance. Shinjiro looks like one of those guys you wouldn't dare mess around with in a dark back alley. He's not cheery, he doesn't give a care about his appearance, and he doesn't take shit from people who disrupt his peace. But looks are deceiving in some ways.

Shinjiro tended to cut class often. When he wasn't hiding out on the school rooftop napping, he was camped in the dark alleys of Port Island Station, quietly observing and watching the less savory of individuals. And he was okay with that; the future wasn't looking good for him, and he was certain there were other people out there who deserved a better life than him. Having accidentally killed an innocent woman with his persona, Shinjiro's life as a happy teenager came to an end, and he couldn't just wipe away the guilt and pain that came with the woman's death. He quietly waited for justice to be dealt, taking highly toxic drugs (which he didn't know were harmful when he started them) called suppressants to weaken his persona so that it didn't have the chance to kill anyone else. In short, the kid has a serious sort of martyr complex.

Should someone try to puff out their chest and give him or good people grief, Shinjiro deals with them as efficiently and effortlessly as possible. When the main character, Yukari and Junpei went to Port Island Station to gather information on a missing girl, Shinjiro emerged from the shadows and sent the punk that was harassing his kouhai scurrying away with a simple headbutt...then promptly scolded them for coming to such a dangerous place.

In general, Shinjiro is concerned for the well being of his friends more than his own; he just doesn't like to get all sappy and show it. He feeds and cares for SEES canine comrade Koromaru, helps Fuuka improve her cooking, and with the female main character's encouragement, cooks and prepares a huge dinner party for everyone at the dormitory in her game path. Pissing Shinjiro off is something you want to steer clear of doing, but earning his trust and respect is something you won't regret in the long run.

Contrary to popular belief, this powerhouse does show emotion outside of his permanent frown. Before October 4th, he feared attachment, and encouraged the female main character not to get close to him so that she wouldn't miss him when he was gone (but that ended up not quite happening in more ways than one). He's been known to shed tears during the emotional heroic animals film festival and crack a smile for the main character on occasion. That doesn't mean he won't try to hide it or brush it off, but he's not very good at doing so. While he and Koromaru were watching his favorite cooking show, Yukari, Fuuka, and Aigis returned from an outing. Shinjiro panicked and put his cooking magazine over his face to make it look like he was asleep, but Aigis' ability to talk to dogs revealed that Shinjiro was not, putting him into an embarrassing situation.

(CR)AU Information
Shinjiro is from the female main character's story. The key differences for him are as follows:
- Shinjiro seems more expressive and, while a hardened warrior housing a gentle soul in both games, shows it more in P3P.
- Shinjiro does not die on October 4th; he instead falls into a coma, and then remains hospitalized until the spring. He is severely weakened, calling himself 'a sick guy', but very much alive.
- Shinjiro develops a very close relationship with the female protagonist.

Gem: Petrified Wood. I chose petrified wood for him because of its symbolism with the events of October 4th, since he arrives after falling into a coma from his gun shots wounds, I decided that his gem would be petrified wood and would sit at the site of the wounds. Petrified wood is a gem that replaces wood's decaying organic material, so for Shinjiro, petrified wood sits in place of where he was injured, replacing the area of his body that was damaged with gemstone. The color of his is mostly orange with hints of brown and white.

Power Considerations:
1. Petrified Wood Armor and Shields
Shinjiro can turn a small area of his body into more petrified wood temporarily, acting as a sort of body armor. As his mastery of this power increases, he can eventually become fully covered in the armor. His armor would work better if he happens to be near dead trees or plants, in which the quality of the armor would increase. At its strongest, he could form small pillars (about the height of an adult human) as shields, and possibly use them as projectiles, though doing so in such a way would take a lot out of him.

2. Dog Speak
Gradually, Shinjiro can learn to speak to and understand dogs. At first he can make out very simple words and phrases, but by trying to talk to them, his grasp of the language will improve.

3. 'Hobby Horse' mount
Shinjiro can summon a gem mount that, at first, looks like a toy hobby horse made out of petrified wood and ridiculously cute looking. He can ride it at about the same speed as a bicycle, and, while it hovers, it doesn't really float more than a few inches off the ground. As he gets better at summoning it, it would be more elaborate and badass looking (like his persona Castor's mount), and go faster. At maximum power, flight or gliding is possible.
